Susan Clews appointed as new Acas Chief Executive

Susan Clews has today been announced as the new Chief Executive for the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas).

Susan joined Acas as an adviser and conciliator in 1993 and has held a variety of senior roles within the organisation since then and currently works as Acas' Chief Operations Officer.

Acas Chair, Sir Brendan Barber, said:

"I am absolutely delighted that Susan will be Acas' new CEO. Susan is an experienced and knowledgeable leader who knows Acas inside out through her many years of service to the organisation.

"Her energy, drive and commitment will be invaluable in her new role and I look forward to working with her to maintain our reputation as Britain's leading authority on workplace relations."

Susan added:

"I am thrilled to be heading Acas as the new CEO. I'm very proud to be leading an organisation that has so many talented people who work with dedication to promote good workplace relations and resolve the most difficult of disputes.

"I want to enhance Acas' reputation as independent, impartial and trusted workplace experts who make a real difference to peoples' working lives."

Acas' current Chief Executive, Anne Sharp, will be leaving Acas at the end of this month and will head up the Honourable Society of Lincoln's Inn in the New Year as its Under Treasurer.

Susan will officially take over as Acas Chief Executive in December.

  1. Susan Clews spent the early part of her career working in the Civil Service which included roles within job centres, benefit offices and running training programmes. She joined Acas in 1993 as a Senior Adviser and Conciliator in Yorkshire and Humber. She undertook a variety of roles until becoming Regional Director for the North West in 2003. Between 2009 and 2015 Susan was Acas Director of Strategy. Susan has been Acas Chief Operations Officer since August 2015. Susan is also Acas' Diversity and Inclusion Champion.
